Out of the several methods Denise Jacobs lists, I believe reframing negative thoughts is the most successful method. By consciously transforming negative thoughts into positive affirmations, you are shifting your mindset to focus on your strengths and achievements. This builds up mental resilience in handling challenges with a positive outlook, as well as boosts confidence and motivation.
"Hyperbolic Discounting" refers to the tendency to prefer smaller, immediate rewards over larger, delayed ones, even when waiting would result in a better outcome. Perceived value tends to decline as the delay increases. One method McRaney identifies to counteract this would be "Commitment Devices". These help individuals stick to their long-term goals by limiting their ability to make impulsive decisions. For me, these would work best, as setting up systems to avoid immediate gratification helps me stay focused on the bigger picture or aspiration. For example, I am a huge spender and impulse buyer, and sitting down to commit myself to a long-term spending/saving/budgeting plan is very beneficial.
